These are to Certify, The Honble The Commissioners for receiving Claims and Petitions &ca of the Loyalists from North America, that Thomas JOHNSTON a Black, after he had been Serving as a conductor to Lord CORNWALLIS’s Army, he was strongly recommended to me by The Honble Major HANGER as a faithful trusty man; that he served on Board His Majesty’s Ship’s Rhinoceros, and Jersey under my Command from the 25th March 1782 to the 30th Novr. 1783, during which time he behaved himself with great marks of attachment to Government, was Sober, honest, diligent, and obedient to Command, and highly deserving the Commissioners attention. Given under my hand at London this 6th July 1786.
