Challenge to John Lawrence

This letter challenging Ensign John LAWRENCE to a duel ultimately led to the death of Ensign MOFFITT and court martial of LAWRENCE.

The original letter is in the possession of Jan Nordhoff, whose husband is a LAWRENCE descendant. We are very grateful that she has kindly shared a copy with us.

[Note the slight, but immaterial, differences between the original letter and the transcript as it appears in the court martial proceedings.]

Richmond 13th Jany 1780

Sir

your in Consequence of your behavour to me Last Night (When totally intoxicated) Request that Satisfaction due toward one Gentleman by another. Mr. McNAB sends you your Sidearms & Desires you will not Consider your Self any Longer under arest by him. I now call upon you as a Gentleman and a Soldier with your Pistels & Sword to wipe of[f] any Odium I might have received by your Ungentleman Like Treatment
