Duke of Cumberland's Regiment
Campbell to Carleton

Jamaica 21st December 1782

Sir,

The Right Honourable Lord Charles MONTAGU will deliver this to Your Excellency, and I have the honour to enclose, the Copy of a Letter from the Secretary of State, whereby you will see that His Lordship is authorised to raise a second Battalion to the Duke of Cumberland's Provincial Regiment of foot, whereof his is Lieut. Colonel Commandant.

The Zeal, and disinterested Conduct with which Lord Charles MONTAGU raised the first Battalion of his Regiment; its discipline, and the utility of which it has proved in this Island, induced me to recommend His Lordship in the warmest terms to Your Excellency, and to assure You that a second Battalion to His Lordship's Regiment would add greatly to the strength of this Garrison and the security of the Island.

Your Excellency I hope will do me the favour to Order that this Battalion may be raised under the direction of the Inspector General's Office at New York, from which Lord Charles MONTAGU found the greatest benefit when he raised the first Battalion at Charles Town:

and I have not only to solicit every aid to His Lordship in raising and completing his numbers, but that, thro' Your Excellency's favour, he may likewise be assisted in the means of transporting them to Jamaica.

I have the honour to be with great respect,

Sir,
Your Excellency's
Most faithful and
Most obedt: humble Servant
Archd: CAMPBELL

His Excellency
Sir Guy CARLETON K.B.
