King's Royal Regiment of New York
Ross' Appointment as Major

(Copy)

Quebec 21st July 1780

Sir/

Having judged it expedient for His Majesty's Service to direct that a Second Battalion, to the Royal Regiment of New York, to be forthwith raised, both to be Commanded by Lieut. Colonel Sir John Johnson, and having great Confidence in Your Abilities, Activity and Zeal for the King's Service, I have thought fit to Appoint You to the Rank, and to Act as Major until further Orders, in the said Battn. to be raised,

but as You cannot, consistently with the Kings Order, dated the 9th of May 1777 enjoy Commissions in different Regiments, You are to keep your Company in the 34th Regiment; and I furnish You with the Letter of Service appointing You to the Rank and to Act as Major for which You will receive an Additional Allowance of Five Shillings per day to make up to You the pay of Major while doing that duty

The Second Battalion will consist of the same Number of Companies as the First, to which Officers will hereafter be appointed, and all such Officers and Soldiers to be raised are hereby ordered and directed to obey You as their Major.

From the present flattering Prospect of Success in Recruiting it is possible this Battn. will be soon completed and I persuade myself no Time will be lost on Your Part, in preparing it for Service.

I am Sir &c.
[Signed] F[rederick] H[aldimand]
