Loyalist Muster Rolls
Nova Scotia Militia

Presented here is the first complete set of muster rolls known for Butler’s Rangers. Later rolls were made out, but sadly have not yet surfaced.

This set, and a 1783 return that is similar to a muster roll, can be found in the Haldimand Papers. The Haldimand Papers are in the British Library as part of the Additional Manuscripts.

The reference for the two sets is Additional Manuscripts, No. 21,765. Also in the Additional Manuscripts, No. 21,753, are a number of pay abstracts for the corps.

These mostly just list numbers of men, rather than names, however they do usually have the casualties listed. A casualty would generally be anyone who died, deserted or was discharged. Some similar documents are in the Public Record Office, War Office, Class 28, Volume 4.

For additional information on this regiment please see the Regimental History of the the Nova Scotia Militia.

The muster below shows the corps as it stood shortly after the Battle of Wyoming in Pennsylvania.
