Memorial of Joshua Gidney of New York

To Colonel Thomas DUNDAS and J
PEMBERTON Esquire two of the
Commissioners appointed further to enquire
into the losses and services of all such
Persons who have suffered in their rights,
properties and possessions during the late
unhappy dissentions in America in
consequence of their loyalty to his Majesty
and attachment to the British Government
by an Act passed in the Twenty Fourth year
of the Reign of his present Majesty and by
the said Act directed to repair to Nova
Scotia or any other of his Majestys Colonies
in America to enquire into such Claims.

The Memorial of Joshua GIDNEY late of Dutchess County in the Province of New York Humbly Sheweth

That your Memorialist from the beginning of the late Rebellion opposed the same to the utmost of his power and was on that Account imprisoned above Two Hundred Miles from his home near five months & confined to his Farm, near Seven Months.

That in April 1777 your Memorialist effected his escape & carried with him into New the British Lines Two Hundred & six men most of whom enlisted in His Majestys service.

That your Memorialist obtained a Commission Warrant as Lieutenant in a Company of Horse & raised more than his proper Compliment of Men but without being accused of any fault or being brought to any Court Martial your Memorialist was totally neglected and never received any Commission or pay for raising the Men 10 Guineas only excepted.

That your Memorialist was a Volunteer at the attack of Fort Montgomery where he flatters himself he at least did his Duty.

That the Rebels have seized & confiscated a Farm belonging to your Memorialist in Dutchess County aforesaid containing 225 Acres with 3 Dwelling Houses, one Barn & estimated at £ 2,000 New York Currency & on which was no other incumbrance than a Mortgage for £ 63 New York Curry.

That your Memorialist has also suffered by the Rebels the following Losses viz. in stock on his Farm including a valuable stallion to the amount of £ 492. 10. Wheat in the Ground £ 60. a Chais, Waggon, sleigh & Harness & Farming Utensils £ 143. Household Furniture £ 100. besides furnishing Two Horses for his Majestys service worth £ 50.

All which your Memorialist submits with the utmost defference in full confidence that such compensation & reimbursement shall be made & allowed as will be consistent with Equity & Justice.
