Witness on behalf of Jane (Alexander) Constable of Massachusetts

I do hereby certify to all whom it may concern, that Mrs. Jane CONSTABLE is the widow of the late Capt. Alexander CONSTABLE of the 2d Battalion of General Delanceys Brigade of American Provincials.

In the year 1779, as well as Aid de Camp to Major General Prevost, I had the honour to be Deputy Inspector General of Provincial Forces for the Southern district of North America, and I had therefore particular access to know that Capt. CONSTABLE, was for many months a prisoner at Charles Town, and that from his well known attachment to Government, and the endeavours he constantly exerted in it's service, having brought upon himself the bitterest enmity of an ungenerous Enemy, he contined to experience during the whole time of his Captivity the cruelest hardships easily in the power of civilized malice to invent, to which was imputed the cause of his death, which happened soon after his release, & by which his now unfortunate widow & happless Infant Daughter are left in the utmost Indigence and distress.

Given under my hand in London this 6th day of August 1783.

[Sign'd]   Alexr. SHAW, late Capt. 60th Regt.
